Help Keep Your Engine Protected with Regular Oil Change Services

Motor oil and lube changes are very important for keeping your engine functioning properly. Oil is essential for helping your engine operate at optimum performance levels. Clean oil protects your engine by performing several critical functions. Motor oil lubricates your engine so there isn’t any excess friction or wear on moving parts. Oil cools your engine while it’s running, fights rust and corrosion buildup within the engine, reduces engine noise, and works with the oil filter to clean the engine and remove harmful contaminants.

But oil doesn’t last forever. When you drive your vehicle, your engine becomes very hot, and this heat causes oil to break down. As the oil starts to break down, it doesn’t move through your engine as well, which means the oil cannot do its job as effectively. Also, as oil circulates through the engine over time, it absorbs dirt, debris, and other gritty particles. Dirty oil can’t lubricate your engine correctly and has decreased friction-reduction abilities, resulting in increased wear on sensitive moving parts within the engine.

Therefore, we recommend having an oil change performed every 3,000 miles or three months, whichever comes first (unless you are using full synthetic oil, which can last up to 5,000 miles). Because a new engine can cost a couple of thousand dollars, it just makes sense to protect it with regularly scheduled oil changes, which are much less expensive.

Our goal is to help you keep your engine properly protected and your vehicle running at its best!

Why Should You Have Lube and Oil Change Services Performed at Bruce's Tire?

As mentioned above, your engine needs motor oil to keep everything in proper working order. But old oil can break down, become dirty, and end up harming your vehicle.

During an oil change, our technician will change the oil filter, drain the dirty oil from your engine, and replace it with new, clean oil to keep your engine running smoothly. We will also lubricate the chassis and the internal framework that holds your car together. When we are finished with your oil change service, your engine should be running smoothly.

You can count on our ASE-certified mechanics for high-quality, professional service to help keep your vehicle running at its best. Contact us online or call us today to schedule your next oil change and lube service.

We proudly service the needs of customers in Oakland, CA; Fremont, CA; San Jose, CA; and the surrounding areas.

The Different Types of Oil Explained

Not all motor oil is created equal. There are several different types of oil, all with varying viscosity (thickness), levels of engine protection, and cost. The four main types of motor oil are as follows:

Conventional Oil

This is what would be considered “standard” oil. It is a completely natural, crude mineral oil that is partially refined in a factory. During the refinement, several things are done to improve the oil’s viscosity (thickness) and engine protection properties. Compared to the other types of oil, conventional motor oil is not as highly refined.

For many people, the biggest pro for using conventional oil is that it is a budget-friendly option while still being able to help keep your car running smoothly. Keep in mind, though, that since conventional oil is less refined than other oils, it will become thicker and dirtier faster and will not provide the same level of engine protection that you can get from the cleaner, more refined motor oil options.

Full Synthetic Oil

Unlike conventional oil, full synthetic oil is entirely manufactured in a lab or factory. This oil is usually much cleaner and more consistent due to its highly controlled manufacturing process. These oils are evaluated against stringent standards, making them an overall better choice for protecting your engine.

When it comes to the cost of an oil change, full synthetic oil will usually be more expensive than conventional oil. Depending on how much oil your vehicle takes, you’ll usually pay $20 to $40 more. However, synthetic motor oil lasts longer than conventional oil, so it does not need to be changed as frequently. For synthetic oil, an oil change is usually recommended every 5,000 miles (versus every 3,000 miles for conventional oil).

Synthetic Blend Oil

Synthetic blend motor oil is a hybrid mixture of conventional oil and full synthetic oil. The goal of manufacturing synthetic blend oil is to maximize the benefits of both types of oil while reducing the drawbacks.

A synthetic blend will offer better engine protection and performance than conventional oil but not quite as much as you would get with full synthetic oil. This oil usually lasts slightly longer than conventional oil but again, not as long as a full synthetic oil will. Also, the cost of a synthetic blend oil change will be slightly higher than conventional oil but not as high as full synthetic oil.

Overall, a synthetic blend oil is a decent middle ground option for those wanting to keep costs low while still ensuring better protection for their engine than conventional oil offers.

High Mileage Oil

High-mileage oil is somewhat similar to synthetic blend oil but is specially formulated for engines that have done over 75,000 miles. This oil includes unique additives that offer extra protection for older engines, significantly reduce oil evaporation, and help improve overall engine performance. These additives include viscosity modifiers, specialized detergents, seal conditioners, and anti-corrosion agents.

This extra protection is key for high-mileage vehicles that are more susceptible to oil burn-off and corrosion, both of which contribute to increased engine wear and decreased lifespan of the engine.

How to Determine Which Type of Oil is Best for Your Engine

The different types of oil have different viscosities and additives and offer varying levels of engine protection. All this information can quickly become confusing. These days, there aren’t any “bad” motor oils being sold. As long as the oil that is put into your engine is the correct weight/viscosity and level of fluid, it will be effective. The question is, what kind of extra protection does your engine need to run its best?

So, if you’re trying to determine which type of oil is best for your vehicle, start by looking at your vehicle’s owner’s manual. This is where you’ll find the minimum oil specifications that your vehicle’s manufacturer recommends.

When determining which oil might be the best option, you need to consider several other factors:

  • Type of vehicle: For example, a high-performance sports car will need a different type of oil than a midsize sedan would use.
  • Total mileage/age: In most cases, a newer vehicle will require either a synthetic blend or full synthetic motor oil. In an engine with over 75,000 miles, a high-mileage motor oil is recommended to provide sufficient engine protection.
  • Driving habits: Your driving habits and where you drive have a big impact on your engine oil’s life expectancy. For example, if you frequently drive in stop-and-go traffic or often tow heavy loads often, a higher quality oil may be needed to sufficiently prevent excessive wear and tear in your engine.

At Bruce's Tire, our expert technicians can help you pinpoint what the best type of engine oil is for your vehicle and driving habits.
